Framing Pastels

In the usual method the pastel is framed behind a single or double card mount. There is always a danger that grains of pastel will drop off and be trapped between the glass and the card mount. A way of helping to avoid this is to glue a card slip behind the mount raising it slightly from the picture surface.

Here is an example of commercial framing where the pastel is separated from the glass by a slip with a gilt finish

This picture has a slip made from a standard plain hardwood strip moulding. These are readily available in diy shops. They can be finished in a colour which is best suited to the painting.
